vortrag:”governance in the making. an empirical turn on political science and technology”, 06.02.; tu berlin

napara111 | 26 January, 2012

“Governance in the making. An empirical turn on political science and technology” (in German)
Mon, 6 Feb, 6 - 8pm, Hardenbergstr. 16-18, 10623 Berlin, Room 6.06

On the occasion of his appointment as Junior Professor for Sociology of Politics at the Department of Sociology, Technische Universität Berlin, Jan-Peter Voß cordially invites you to his opening lecture, “Governance in the making. Eine empirische Wende auf Politikwissenschaft und -technik”, and subsequent reception.

The lecture outlines a research perspective in which the linked development of theoretical policy models with new forms of political practice come to figure as a focus of analysing governance change. A programmatic outline will be supplemented by looking at current research on “policy instruments” (environmental markets and citizen participation procedures). Looking forward, the discussion will focus on alliances that are currently being forged with a view to realising a global policy for sustainable development.

Please RSVP if you intend to come by 2 February 2012 to Thomas Crowe.

debatte: thomas sieverts & lars lerup: lacunas—the middle landscape, hu berlin (hzk), 23.01.

napara111 |

“The Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik (HZK) and Aedes Network Campus (ANCB) cordially invite you:
Thomas Sieverts and Lars Lerup: Lacunas—The Middle Landscape
A dialogue moderated by Wolfgang Schäffner und Gunnar Hartmann.
Welcome by Hans-Jürgen Commerell (director ANCB).
date: Monday, 23.1.12, 6 p.m.
place: Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6, 3031

Lacunas—The Middle Landscape
Routinely dismissed as mere sprawl, the middle landscape is the black hole of recent urbanism, absorbing human energy and resources but seldom revealing the principles of its operation. Besides the recent affirmation for the dense city under the auspice of sustainability, the reality confronts us with a rather complex conurbation and a weak set of planning instruments. The New Dialogues series, moderated by Wolfgang Schäffner und Gunnar Hartmann, invited two key investigators on the subject of the middle landscape, Thomas Sieverts and Lars Lerup, to reexamine our understanding of unregulated cities—their huge potential and difficult problems for the twenty-first-century.”

cfp:”shaping innovation in governance? Inducements, opportunities & limitations for engaging with governance in the making”, tu berlin, 31.05.-1.06.12

Call for Papers for the 2012 Berlin Forum Innovation in Governance: “Shaping innovation in governance? Inducements, opportunities and limitations for engaging with governance in the making”.

31 May - 1 June 2012 at the Technische Universität Berlin

Deadline for all submissions: Friday 20 January 2012

The conference is pivoted on the question of whether and how innovations in governance can be deliberately shaped. This suggests a focus on the relation between knowledge and politics in processes of advancing new forms of governance. More specifically, we are interested in discussing the relation between, on the one hand, a discourse of innovation in governance, theoretical models of change, the articulation of designs and strategies, and, on the other hand, the agency of innovation, actual practices of forging alliances, softening established orders, configuring and evaluating new arrangements, and linking up with broader transformation processes as they unfold. “organising science:the increasingly formal structuring of academic research” at egos colloquium 2012

admin | 1 December, 2011

Sub-theme: Organising science: The increasingly formal structuring of academic research.
at: 28th EGOS Colloquium 2012, Helsinki: “Design!?” July 5–7, 2012

Convenors: Richard Whitley, University of Manchester & Jochen Gläser, Technical University Berlin

The changing governance of the public sciences since World War II has been accompanied by a rapid increase in the types and numbers of formal organisations involved in the production, coordination and evaluation of pubic scientific knowledge. Research organisations themselves have not only grown in numbers but are also more varied in their structures and missions (e.g. Merz and Biniok 2010), and have formed associations that organise lobbying or collaboration. The widespread transition from recurrent to project funding has increased the importance of funding agencies which channel money from the state or from industry to science (Braun 1998, Benninghoff and Braun 2010). Science policy making has additionally become based on a large number of advisory bodies, intermediary and lobby organisations (Van der Meulen and Rip 1998), and the institutionalisation of evaluations of research performance has given rise to agencies that oversee or conduct evaluations (Whitley and Gläser 2007). Researchers also make use of commercial organisations, especially publishers (Thompson 2005) and providers of research equipment, materials, and services (Kleinman 2003: 93-95). Finally, professional organisations of academics have become more active in both organising collaboration and lobbying for the interests of researchers (Schofer 1998; Simpson 2002).
