The Munich Center for Technology in Society (MCTS) at Technische Universität München is inviting applications for 3 Lecturer Positions (Akademischer Rat/Akademische Rätin, A13, m/f/d), full time, 3 years (with 3y renewal option) as part of core staff of the interdisciplinary social science Master’s program “Responsibility in Science, Engineering and Technology” (RESET). The envisioned start date is 15 October 2021.
The Munich Center for Technology in Society (MCTS) is one of the leading centers for science and technology studies (STS) in Europe. MCTS offers you an excellent, inspiring, and international social science research environment at one of Europe’s eminent technical universities where you will find ample opportunities and support to develop your academic profile. Added to TUM’s vibrant academic and entrepreneurial community in 2015, MCTS’ mission at TUM is premised on the insight that today’s challenges are thoroughly sociotechnical in nature, and that excellence in natural science and engineering requires coequal excellence in the social sciences to address corollary questions in the social, political, legal, historical, and ethical domain. The MCTS community includes STS researchers with a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and is committed to multi-faceted forms of dialogue across both expert communities and various publics. MCTS is currently undergoing a transition to become a “Department for STS” as part of a new TUM School of Social Science and Technology, to be launched in fall 2021.
Requirements
Candidates must have completed/submitted their dissertation in Science and Technology Studies (STS) or a related field, e.g. qualitative sociology, anthropology, history of science, political science, geography, innovation studies, law, or other relevant fields, presuming that they can demonstrate an equivalent level of qualification and subject-specific expertise with a clear focus on STS. Applicants should ideally demonstrate a dual qualification including training in both the social and the natural sciences/engineering reflected in their research and/or university education. Candidates from the social sciences without such a dual qualification should demonstrate knowledgeability in one or more scientific or technical domains obtained through previous research. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work engages in at least one of the following fields:
- Life sciences, biomedicine and health technologies
- Environmental sciences and green technologies
- Digital technologies and artificial intelligence
- Energy and mobility technologies
- Science, technology and innovation governance and policy
Other thematic areas are welcome if the application is excellent. A distinct research profile and teaching experience in STS, especially concerning issues of responsibility, are beneficial. Candidates are expected to participate in the MCTS community and to proactively build networks into other (scientific or technical) departments at TUM.
…an excellent and inspiring research environment in which early career researchers will refine and consolidate their profile as promising internationally recognized researchers. MCTS offers many forms of dialogue both with the scientific community as well as the general public. Working within the MCTS you will gain inside experience of the academic world and have access to various promising career pathways. We are committed to raising the number of women in research and teaching. Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities are treated with preference given comparable qualification.
