Stellenangebot: 10 Professorships in the Social Sciences at the Technical University of Munich (TUM)

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for up to 10 Professorships in the Social Sciences. We are hiring on all career levels (W2 Tenure Track Assistant Professor, with tenure track to W3, or tenured W3, Associate or Full Professor), and as soon as possible. The specific department (Governance, Educational Sciences, or Science, Technology and Society – STS) in which the faculty will be appointed will be determined at the time of hiring and in correspondence with the applicant’s academic profile.

The TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology brings together an international community of researchers and educators from the fields of governance, educational science, and science & technology studies (STS). Launched in October 2021, it enhances the role of social sciences through interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach as integral part of TUM’s commitment to Human-Centered Engineering. The new School offers a unique intellectual environment with a commitment to the public interest, social justice, and an inclusive culture of learning and exploration in an interdisciplinary setting to understand, evaluate, and shape some of the world’s biggest societal challenges and their interaction with technological transformations.

The TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology invites applications for up to ten professorships in the social sciences with a focus on key innovation areas relevant to TUM’s overall mission and ongoing socio-technical transformation processes. In this next phase of the School’s expansion, we are particularly interested in further strengthening our research and educational capacity in the following areas:

  • Technological transformation of society
  • Sustainable mobility and energy systems
  • Urban spaces
  • Medicine and health
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion

We invite applications from individuals who bring – and ideally combine – perspectives from different backgrounds, disciplines, and methods, including governance, education, STS, philosophy, sociology as well as psychology, anthropology, communication studies, and critical studies (incl. gender and post-colonial studies), among others, and bring them to bear on one or more of the above-mentioned research topics.

Responsibilities

We seek to appoint candidates who bring in and develop innovative ways to accelerate the School’s mission to tackle some of the most pressing public interest challenges of our time, and to achieve social impact, for instance by using new technology or innovative social science methods. The responsibilities include research and teaching as well as the promotion of early-career scientists. Teaching responsibilities include courses in the university’s bachelor’s and master’s programs as well as engagement in doctoral and lifelong learning programs.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated excellent achievements in research and teaching in an internationally recognized scientific environment, relative to the relevant career level (please see www.tum.de/en/faculty-recruiting-faq/ for further information). A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude, are prerequisites. Substantial research experience abroad is expected. The candidates must be committed to collaborative and interdisciplinary research at the intersection of social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, and technology, as well as to promoting innovative approaches, which contribute to the understanding of important research questions about innovation for social transformation processes.
