For the EU H2020 project ASSISTANT we are looking for a person responsible for the further development of the “human centric architecture” of an AI development project for industrial manufacturing. In the project we are working as social science partners together with colleagues from engineering, computer science and AI ethics as well as three large companies as use case partners.
About us
The European New School of Digital Studies (ENS) is a joint academic venture of the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) and the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan. The chair of Sociology of Technology (Jan-H. Passoth) is home of the Science & Technology Studies Group at ENS. Our research focuses on (digital) technologies of migration and border control, on infrastructures of digital Europe, on interdisciplinary forms of co-creation und prototyping, as well as on digital and in(ter)ventive methods. Based on a strong background in sociology, cultural studies and science and technology studies we collaborate with researchers from computer science, electrical engineering, political science, philosophy, and history and are engaged with actors from politics, civil society and the arts.
Your tasks
The main task for the now beginning second half of the project is conducting workshops in which the (software) components to be developed are discussed with a focus on values, norms, and potential social and political issues. The workshops focus on identifying controversial issues and biases and documenting the results in the central architecture document. The workshops are also used as ethnographic empirical field sites. This includes the collection and analysis of data, and the dissemination of results through workshops, conferences, and publications.
Your training/skills
- Training (MA and/or PhD) in a social science discipline with skills relevant to the project in areas of science and technology studies, infrastructure studies, critical data and algorithm studies or related fields
- Training in qualitative research, especially participatory, co-laborative and ethnographic approaches
- Experience in debates on “Responsible AI” is required, interest in current developments in AI, machine learning and “Digital Twins” is an advantage.
- Experience in planning and organizing an empirical research project
- Ability to work independently on own initiative and meet deadlines
- Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written in English
- Excellent interpersonal skills including collaborative teamwork
