At the Idea_Lab, the University of Graz is seeking to appoint a Professor of Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (40 hours per week; selection procedure in accordance with Section 99 (1) of the Universities Act (UG); fixed-term employment for 5 years according to the Salaried Employees Act (AngG); expected starting date January 1st 2023).
The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent research profile in the field of ethics of digital transformation, with special emphasis placed on AI and/or data-intensive research. The main areas of responsibility include research into the responsible development and use of AI, machine learning and big data in different areas of society such as business, administration or policy. Possible research topics, which can optionally be addressed via science studies, (meta-) ethics or political philosophy, comprise the development of responsible or explainable AI, democracy in the context of AI, autonomy and modification of behaviour or societal innovation and regulation.
Connections to one or more of the established key areas of digital transformation at the University of Graz, including the interdisciplinary basic research into AI and data-intensive methods at the Idea_Lab or the field of excellence “Smart Regulation”, are preferred. A strong commitment to interdisciplinary research, efforts to attract contractual research projects and teaching in the interdisciplinary master’s programme “AI and society” are expected.
Employment requirements:
- Austrian or equivalent foreign higher education degree corresponding with the position (doctorate/PhD)
- Habilitation or equivalent qualification
- Outstanding academic qualifications in research and teaching in the relevant discipline (commensurate with stage of academic career)
- Skills in higher education didactics and online teaching
- Gender mainstreaming skills
- Proven experience in interdisciplinary projects
- International publications and lectures
- Technical understanding of AI and ML (desirable)
- Involvement in relevant international scientific communities
- Competence to hold lectures in English and German
- Management and leadership skills

Minimum Salary: The minimum remuneration as stated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement is EUR 76.127,80 gross per year. Salary subject to negotiation.
