The IHS – Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna is a leading non-university research institute that creates empirically based knowledge on significant economic and social challenges of our time. It delivers excellent applied basic research and impartial scientific policy advice, combining economic and social science perspectives. IHS is looking to fill the following position in the Research Group “Science, Technology and Social Transformation”

Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d, 30h/week)

Your work at IHS will focus on academic research and policy advice in the field of Responsible Research and Innovation. As a junior researcher, you will develop your dissertation project and be involved in the ongoing projects of the research group, in particular large-scale EU funded research on the social implications of cutting-edge agrochemical solutions for sustainable agriculture. In this project you will

  • Learn to apply the Social Readiness Thinking Tool (https://thinkingtool.eu)
  • Participate in managing reflections on and orientation towards responsible research practices
  • Analyze ethnographic observations of scientific practices
  • Co-design and co-create responsible research practices
  • Communicate findings to the research community and the public

About you

  • You have completed a Master’s degree in sociology, STS or a related field.
  • You have a strong interest in responsible research practices.
  • You have initial experience and are prepared to conduct methodologically demanding qualitative and quantitative studies. Knowledge of ethnography is desirable. Statistical and programming skills are not required but appreciated.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Good command of German is an advantage.

The monthly salary for the advertised position is based on the FWF scheme for doctoral candidates and amounts to € 2,684.10 gross for a 30-hour week, paid 14 times per year.
The position is to be filled on September 1, 2024. The initial contract period is 3 years, with the possibility of an extension upon successful internal evaluation.
