- The Robert K. Merton Center for Science Studies (RMZ) serves as an interdisciplinary platform for research and teaching in Science Studies in its broadest sense. Specifically, this includes Science and Technology Studies, Sociology of Science, Library and Information Science, Higher Education Research, History of Science, Meta-Research and others. The international research project “MultiSocVal – Wider societal value of research and consequences of its assessment: A multi-country and multi-method study” (https://hu.berlin/multisocval) investigates, through an international and multi-methodological approach, how various countries understand and evaluate valuable research to develop a conceptual framework that strengthens science policy and scientific practices. A doctoral position is being advertised in this project to conduct bibliometric analyses and qualitative interviews in the context of identification of markers of societal impact.
job description:
- scientific work in the project ‘MultiSocVal’, in particular planning, implementation and evaluation of bibliometric analyses and guided interviews.
- Analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and their combination with other (survey) data of the project
- Presentation of results in German and English at professional conferences domestically and internationally
- Preparation of results for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals in German and English
- Active exchange and networking with international project partners
- scientific qualification (doctorate)
requirements:
- completed M.A. degree (or equivalent) in Social Sciences, Information Sciences, Economics, or a related field a relevant subject (e. g. Science and Technology Studies, Social Sciences, European Ethnology, Cultural Studies, etc.)
- solid knowledge of relevant theoretical concepts in science research, especially the sociology of quantification
- solid knowledge in the field of scientometrics
- knowledge in quantitative and qualitative research methods
- experience in statistical programming (R, Python)
- experience with databases (REST, SQL, possibly NoSQL)
- very good command of the English language
