The Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for the position of Tenure Track Assistant Professor in »Ethics of AI in Neuroscience« to begin as soon as possible. The position is a W2 fixedterm (6 year) tenure-track professorship with the possibility for promotion to a tenured W3. 

Scientific Environment

The professorship will be assigned to the TUM School of Medicine and will be situated at the Institute of History and Ethics in Medicine. A second affiliation with the TUM School of Social Science and Technology is possible. The professorship is part of the Bavarian Hightech Agenda and funded by the Bavarian AI Network through the Bavarian Ministry for Science and Culture. The professorship will collaborate with relevant institutions at TUM such as the TUM School of Social Science and Technology, the Cluster of Excellence SyNergy, the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence, The Munich Data Science Institute, and with partners such as the Munich School of Philosophy.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include research and teaching as well as the promotion of early-career scientists. We seek to appoint an expert in the research area of conceptual and practical issues of Ethics of AI in Neuroscience. The professorship will investigate, how novel technologies in neuroscience, and especially AI, can be translated into biomedical research, clinical practice, and society by taking into account ethical and social considerations and how, conversely, ethical and social aspects can be integrated into technology development. Research will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers from cognitive and biomedical neurosciences, data sciences and robotics, and philosophy and social sciences. Teaching responsibilities include courses in the university’s bachelor and master programs. The professorship is expected to help to establish a joint research Center for Responsible AI Technologies, currently planned in collaboration with the Munich School of Philosophy.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated initial scientific achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest international level. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude, are prerequisites. Substantial research experience abroad, full commitment to conduct interdisciplinary research, as well as first experience in leading interdisciplinary research projects  is expected (please see www.tum.de/en/faculty-recruiting-faq/ for further information).
